As a child growing up in Santa Cruz, CA, I loved art. I could draw pretty well, took up photography during my high school years and was told by many teachers I had an artistic gift. I appreciated the compliments, but it was a calling I largely ignored as I pursued a career in business. After receiving my B.S. Business Administration Degree from University of the Pacific, I spent nearly two successful decades in the corporate world, before starting my own photography company in 2013.
Getting started, I used to say, "I'm a corporate guy who had a desire to become a professional photographer." However, this was not actually the case. Truth is, I've always been an Artist. I just spent years trying to fit into a mold that didn't feel natural. Today, I really appreciate the marriage between my artistic expression and years of training in the business world.
Since 2013, my business has expanded beyond Steve Scurich Photography. I also serve as an Instructor with McKay Photography Academy, where we take people on tours all over the world. From local National Parks to places like Antarctica, Tanzania, Iceland, Mongolia, New Zealand and Arctic Norway (just to name a few)...our clients love learning how to make great photographs in amazing places! Additionally, I'm a co-founder of the Photo Enthusiast Network (PEN), started in November 2017. PEN is an online community who share a passion to learn, grow and belong to the friendliest group of photographers out there. Doesn't matter if you just picked up a camera or you've been a working Pro for decades, we are dedicated to helping you improve and find others with the same passion. Links to these companies and more are provided below and on my Contact Page, so please check them out and follow me on social media.
Today, most of my for-hire work is commercial/residential real estate, commissioned landscape or events (sorry, no weddings) and sales of large format print images. Additionally, I've been an active member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) since 2013. Founded in 1868, Professional PPA is the largest and longest-standing nonprofit photography trade association. It currently helps 30,000+ pros elevate their craft and grow their business with resources, protection, and education, all under PPA’s core guiding principle of bridging the gap between photographers and consumers. In 2019, during the Annual International Photographic Competition (IPC), I was fortunate to be awarded a Gold Medal for my submissions. Out of thousands of entries, only 60 Gold Medalists were awarded that year.
After living and working in places like San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles; my wife René and I now call E. Tennessee our home. Thank you for stopping by, please take a look around and feel free to reach out to me!
